Gerber has passed away due to a lung condition at the age of 60.
Known most for his creation of HOWARD
THE DUCK, Gerber rode that same roller coaster as his character.
He ended up in animation where he seemed to live out a full life even
though it may have ended to short for the rest of us. (
Wizard has put its 200 Greatest Comics since their conception. The top five are

Wizard also has put out its ‘Best of 2007’ and here’s some of the list: Best Artist: DC’s Ivan Reis Best Writer: Marvel’s Ed Brubaker Best Series: Marvel’s INCREDIBLE HULK Best Character: Marvel’s IRON MAN Best Moment: DC’s THE REAL SINESTRO CORPS Best Indie: Top Shelf’s SUPER SPY Best Miniseries: Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE: BLOOD OATH
Wizard
has a well done article on Michael Turner and his battle with cancer.
Although he is far from clear, he is working.
It is just at a slower pace. He
still is looking to get Sadly, there have been a few deaths in comics this year. Dave Cockrum finally gave in to his serious diabetes problems. One of my colleagues had him over for a store signing a while ago (when he was healthier) and said that he was a real nice guy. That seems to mean more than even his ground breaking work creating the new X-MEN. Martin Nodell was also one to
pass away recently. You can thank
him for co-creating the first GREEN
LANTERN. He worked with Marvel
and DC. ( Initial responses to IRON MAN seem to be very positive. It is surprising. Not that Marvel is making bad films, but their quality has diminished since the BLADE/X-MEN/SPIDER-MAN first films. The IRON MAN movie is said not to be action-laden. It seems more like a good set-up movie, in the tradition of the aforementioned. (5/3/08) MARY
JANE a plot problem? No worries,
just delete her. After a deal with
the devil, she’s out. A scary
reflection of today’s comic stories. Not
only is this creating a stir to leverage money from people’s wallet, but this
also shows what a problem all comics have in evolving a character, generally
giving up on character growth and rewinding him/her to any earlier (usually
glory days) setting. It also shows
that there are not enough new characters to get people excited.
They’d rather see a dating PETER
PARKER than a newer character hitting the modern dating world.
Disappointing. ( The
HULK movie, out this coming June, will
have the Abomination as the bad guy. Two
pounders in the classic comic traditions. Tim
Roth will play him, in human form at least. ( The HULK
movie, out this coming June, will have the Abomination as the bad guy.
Two pounders in the classic comic traditions.
Tim Roth will play him, in human form at least. ( NICK
FURY will be making his way back onto the pages of Marvel comics in the
upcoming SECRET INVASION stories.
Look for him to come back as the major player in the new war. ( Ed Brubaker in a Wizard
interview said that the WINTER SOLDIER
will be going after IRON MAN, and that
LUKIN and the RED SKULL
will start their combined effort to destroy MAGNETO
may be coming back to UNCANNY X-MEN.
In an interview with Wizard, Ed Brubaker talks about bringing him back.
Marvel still seems to be hesitant to bring him back in full powered-up
form, but it looks like a slow creep in is going to occur. ( In more IRON
MAN movie news, I’ve seen more visual media on upcoming event.
In other movie news, Thomas
Jane won’t be back as the PUNISHER.
Similar to movies of HULK and DAREDEVIL, the
movies that Marvel made that did well but didn’t over perform, they’ve
re-cast at least the lead character. Ray
Stevenson will be playing FRANK CASTLE.
( Whedon out, Ellis in.
Warren Ellis will be taking over ASTONISHING
X-MEN. Not a bad choice to keep
up that high level. ( SPIDER-MAN
will reunite with RED SONJA.
Believe it or not they met in an old MARVEL
TEAM UP. Now, with the CONAN rights given to and then lost by Stan Lee, this new uniting is
actually a cross over between Marvel and Dynamite.
The mini-series is set for 5 issues. ( WOLVERINE
movie in summer 2008 starring David Hasselhoff.
Just kidding. Jackman will be
back, but its summer timeframe is a little shaky.
It’s possible it might get pushed back a year.
Unfortunately, it will be going back in time, so most X-Men characters
won’t be in it. As you might
guess, it is still pretty tight lipped at Marvel. ( THOR
is back … and he’s moving to Wizard had a cool article
about Brett Booth, about his rise, fall (to living in a van), and now is on the
rise again. His ANITA
BLAKE is doing well beyond Marvel’s intent and looks to be continuing well
on. ( In Marvel movie news, HULK
will get rid of Eric Bana and replace him with Edward Norton, a huge find. They
also want to do a 180 from the original movie which had monetary success but was
ultimately loved more by the critics than the rest of the world.
It sounds to be a little less artsy (which the original HULK
tried to be) and a more heroic and humanistic film.
( Skrulls posing as Marvel
Superheroes? I’m feeling a CAPTAIN AMERICA comeback. They’ve
already exposed ELEKTRA as one.
It looks like they’ll be playing with this for a while.
A whodunit and ‘who’s the mole?’ type of atmosphere should prevail
in the Avengers and some of their other titles.
I’m into it. ( Butch Guice is returning to IRON MAN after 20 years. One
of the more intriguing artists of IRON MAN
makes me quite interested. ( In a nice piece by Wizard,
Jeff Loeb says that the next fight between SABRETOOTH
and WOLVERINE will be their last.
I’m finding it hard to believe, but se seemed pretty serious. ( With all of the news about
the big two Marvel movies going on, let’s jump ahead to With the sensationalistic
death of CAPTIAN AMERICA, Marvel is already hinting on replacing Steve
Rogers. I guess when you shamelessly
kill off a legend for shock value and to one-up DC, that is the next logical
step. The odds on favorite here is
Sharon Carter. It would play out
well with Marvel’s plots so far. ( Well, in the movie off
season, GHOST RIDER did fairly well. It
has made around $105 million now, and its worldwide gross is good.
That puts it a little behind DAREDEVIL.
Affleck beats Cage … hmmmmm … Anyway, the word from critics is that
it is good, but its quirkiness can cause some weaknesses as well as strengths.
It does look like a good candidate for a sequel. ( One interesting thing about
the Ghost Rider movie that I heard is that many of the motorcycle stunts are
real (not CGI). They also will be
using BLACKHEART as one of the villains.
Maybe they’ll conclude the third series.
LOL. (
Jim
Palmiotti has been talking a little about his upcoming miniseries TERRA
miniseries. TERRA
will interact with the DC universe but overall will be its own story. ( Well,
I guess I shouldn’t have spoken so soon. Singer
is still said to be coming back, but the next SUPERMAN
film is far off. I’d be surprised
if it showed up before 2011. It is
unsure whether Singer will want to wait that long.
This comes on the heels of a lot of DC movie problems.
The JLA movie is seeing
financial problems as well as seeing potential actors declining roles or
dropping out, WONDER WOMAN is
meandering along since Whedon’s departure, and the FLASH
movie looks to be set to follow these movies (so, it is cooling it’s heels).
I’m not sure why these problems are surfacing.
Warner Brothers should be able to handle all of these movies and needs to
cash in on the BATMAN success (which
will naturally occur because people will want to see Heath Ledger’s last, and
described as legendary, performance.) ( Bryan
Singer says he’ll be back for the next SUPERMAN
film. Unfortunately, that is all
that is real set up to this point. The
first movie stayed true to the Christopher Reeve series, but this next one looks
to veer away. More action, less
chit-chat. ( Anthony Michael Hall plays
will be in the upcoming 'The Dark Knight' sequel.
He’s signed a confidentiality agreement, so mum’s the word for right
now as to what he will be playing. It
sounds as if he will be a shake-up sort of character in the movie. ( Ah, the great scary movie villains, Jason, Freddy Krueger, Ash … ? Yep, Ash will take on the two movie titans in a six issue miniseries. In fact, it is probably out when you read this. (11/21/07) Jim Shooter is coming back to
town and he’s starting with DC. A
legend in the business, a creative personality and a controversial figure,
Shooter sets to help out The Legion.
Most of his work gets success, but it may be fun to see the fireworks,
too. I’m sure he’ll shake up DC
a little, maybe even needed in today’s comic environment. ( SUPERGIRL
is coming to Smallville. Laura
Vandervoort will play the role of SUPERMAN’S
cousin. Unfortunately, it looks like
she’ll play that typical overly-sassy character DC (and Smallville) is
known for. However, they still have
been putting out good plots on the show, and this seems to put more in their
arsenal. ( After reporting about JLA
getting the members, JSA is pulling a
not too shabby move by acquiring KINGDOM
COME SUPERMAN, grey hair and all. Wizard
tells that he will be continuing on after the last KINGDOME
COME story with almost no break. More
shake ups in JSA will occur as well. ( JLA
may be adding new members. The book
is scheduled to add at least one new member.
They’ll need it, as Wizard reports that they’ll take on a
conglomeration of villains at once, including LUTHOR,
JOKER, DR. LIGHT, and POISON IVY.
( DC is upping the ante on BLACK
CANARY. The word is that they
will try to move her up on the popularity list starting in a new mini-series.
With the push for WONDER WOMAN, this may be an overall attempt to snare more female
readers. Although, these two
characters have been favorites on their own, so that is conjecture ( Well, after reporting bad
news about WONDER WOMAN, I now have some good news.
Author Jodi Picoult and Will Pfeifer will join DC to revamp the
character. They’ve been both tight
lipped about what is to come, but there is a push to really get her up to SUPERMAN
and BATMAN status. ( Sadly, it has been fully
confirmed now that Joss Whedon will not be doing the WONDER
WOMAN movie, neither directing nor writing.
Although, they may keep some of his initial ideas.
It looks like the old ‘creative differences’ came into play.
Anyway, it looks like his plate has emptied a little so that he may even
return to TV, but that’s just a rumor. ( In other movie news, THE
DARK KNIGHT will hit the screen in July 2008.
Wizard is reporting that Harvey Dent will be playing TWO-FACE.
He’ll be a solid pick for that role, and he can play it kind of dark,
too. ( I just read from Wizard that JIMMY OLSEN will take on the JOKER
in the upcoming DC series COUNTDOWN.
COUNTDOWN is the next big
project for DC and will explore JIMMY’S role in the DC universe.
I just like it when the average guys take on the big bad villains.
COUNTDOWN will of course
include more than this. ( Want some NON?
Wizard says that they’ll go into NON’S
origin in ACTION COMICS.
They are going to say that he started off smart and was punished as a
dissenter to the KRYPTON policy of keeping the end of the world a secret.
Poor NON.
( Wizard reports that the WATCHMEN
movie is now going into pre-production. Some news has come out about Time for your CAPTAIN
ATOM fix. And you know who you
are. DC plans to use him in both the
DC realm and Wildstorm. Although,
according to Wizard and DC, it is unclear how much they will use him and in what
titles. He does appear to be central
to several plot lines. (
IMAGE, ETC. SERENTITY
moves from TV to movies to comics. A
three issue prequel to the movie is out, which will resolve some questions like,
“Why the hell is Book in this crap town?” ( SPEED RACER is almost here. May 9th, it begins, and hopefully a whole bunch of good, supporting comic books. Dark Horse has an INDIAN JONES miniseries coming in the summer. Movie? (3/10/08) Terry
Moore will return to his roots taking on duties at Abstract Studios.
He’ll start a new series called ECHO about a single mom in Avi
Arad, former Marvel movie maker, is set out to make a movie about a video game.
If you were one of the many slaves to 'Everquest' in the late
90’s/early 2000’s, you’ll be happy to know that there’s more out there
than 'Everquest II.' It looks like
this game could spawn off some miniseries as well. ( With the stunning success of
the TRANSFORMERS in the movie and then in DVD, couldn’t we see this
coming? Yep, the sequel is well on
its way and is scheduled for summer 2009. A
mixture of old characters and new will be in the mix.
That includes the TRANSFORMERS, themselves. ( The Sci Fi channel is
starting one of their more promising books in STRANDED
where a group of humans are left by aliens to do an unknown mission. Obviously
there will be some wolves in sheeps’ clothing here.
This also might end up on the air. ( We keep reporting DARKNESS
news, but I’m considering that a good thing.
The latest is that Phil Hester is bringing the book back to a strong
level of writing. The re-launch
should be on its way in December according to Wizard. ( A ten year project has come
to life in the form of ATOMIC ROBO.
I’ve seen the first panels and it looks good.
This will be a comical look about a hero who fights pretty much
everything you can think of throughout the recent century.
He’ll weave in and out of history, too. ( CONAN
might be making it back to the theatres in 2008.
Millennium Films has just finished initial contract work.
However, it looks like they are trying to make a quick product.
It looks like Conan Properties doesn’t want to get stuck in an endless
loop like some titles that have gone to movies.
The problem might be that it opens the movie up to being a weaker
product. ( Joss Whedon has done so well
with his BUFFY: SEASON 8 that there now seems to be an ANGEL: SEASON 6 in the mix (although that might not be the title).
There even looks to be even more books on the way than that. ( Seth Rogan of ‘30 Year Old Virgin’ and ‘Knocked Up’ will help write the GREEN HORNET movie and possibly star in it. This will probably mean some humor will be involved in the movie in a way that the original series did not. In related news, Brian Smith decided not to be involved with the project, preferring to stick with smaller budget films. Who knew? Someone actually isn’t going after the big bucks. (9/7/07) Top Cow is letting you pick
your own series. At least six
one-shot comics will appear in stores. Two
of which will get voted in for series. My
money is on APHRODITE IX.
Check it out at www.topcow.com. ( WITCHBLADE
is going to start a cross over that will get everyone involved.
This includes the DARKNESS and CYBERFORCE.
FIRST BORN will be a three part miniseries that will kick it off. ( The LONE
RANGER is back. You guys will
have to weigh in if you like it or not. ( WOW!
I saw a THE CROW ad, and I
thought that they were bundling the movies together.
As it turns out, they’re bringing the TV series ‘The Crow: Stairway
to Heaven’ to DVD on July 24th.
I almost forgot about that series. Now,
if they would only bring ‘Special Unit 2’ to DVD … and then start a set of
new shows on SCI FI … on both series. ( Robert Crumb is suing Amazon
as The Comics Journal is covering. It
appears that they used an image that was similar to his ‘Keep on Truckin’’
creation. It looks like he may have
a good case, but will probably settle out of court, as Amazon may have
accidentally thought that the image was public domain. ( JINX
is still rumored to be well on its way with Charlize Theron grabbing the lead.
B. M. Bendis will be writing the screenplay.
Wizard has it out in 2009. ( Sci Fi Channel is set to
start in comics working with Virgin Comics.
Sci Fi plans to use the media of comics as a cheaper way to run through
ideas that may normally work in a pilot for TV.
They also see a need for science fiction comics in general, which is
true. Science fiction comics seem to
have dropped in sales over the years. Here’s
to hoping these comics are more like their series and less like their Sci Fi
Original movies. ( Fantagraphics is being sued!
Okay, nowadays, this isn’t such a big deal.
Every big comic company has been sued in the last 2 years that I can
think of. Some of them more than
once. As ‘The Comics Journal’
reports, Harlan Ellison is suing. His
main beef seems to be with Gary Groth who allegedly never kept to his dealings
with Ellison. ( Every year it seems a new
publisher rises and is poised to make a strong foothold in comics.
IDW seems to be that new kid. As
listed earlier in the year by many adventurous comics, they now plan to take on STAR
TREK bringing multiple series in 2007. It
also seems that they are having good early success. ( HELLBOY’S
2nd movie is starting to move. According
to Wizard, the movie will not involve any direct plot from the comic book.
Also, the B.R.P.D. will be
included. ( |
